Church Gate Posts - Church RoadSitting at the entrance to Church Road, it is thought that this fine pair of gate posts were erected by the Reverend Charles Palairet around 1855 as one of the many improvement projects he sponsored around the village. With their pointed tiled tops, they echo the gothic style of architecture that he favoured at Church Hill Cottage and other buildings that he had a hand in designing around the village. The image in the old postcard shows how the road to the church hugs the contours of the steep-sided combe and how few trees there were in those days.
