Ivydene - Lower Road


Ivydene seems to have started as a house in 1713 built for “IW”, probably John Whittaker, behind it was a cow shed of which the floor drain is still visible. It would be usual for the front door to face south (away from Lower Road) with just a door and 1 upstairs window (now blocked) on the north. At some point the two were joined together by what is now our dining room and the cowshed became our kitchen, an extra room with a boiler was added and the stair case was moved back to make the guest bedroom larger. Probably the thatched roof was replaced and stone quoins put on the house corners, one of these carries the date 1826. These changes meant the front door opening towards Lower Road and 4 new sash windows facing north. At a later date what is now Ashton Coombe was dug out to make “Pearce’s Yard” an agricultural transport company.
