St Anne's Cottage - Court Lane


St Anne's Cottage is a mid-17th Century, Grade II listed, timber-framed cottage located near the junction of Court Lane and St Anne’s Lane near to St Anne’s spring. It is thought that the cottage may have originally been thatched like many of the properties in Bratton of the same age. Today, it is roofed with pan-tiles and has a half-hip to the left and a brick chimney stack to the right. The interior has an exposed timber frame with deep chamfered beams and an inglenook fireplace with bread oven in the south end.

It was owned by the Browne sisters for much of the 20th Century, but needed extensive renovations after it was sold in 2007 as it had been rendered in a coating of pebble-dash for some years. When digging out the floor of the current kitchen the new owners found evidence of a fire pit which they think could point to this part of the building being a forge at some point. There is also a well in the garden near this part of the house. The oak-framed garden room was added in 2016.
