Summerdown House (The Old Vicarage) - Upper Garston Lane


On 15th October 1861 the land upon which Summerdown House, Dan-y-Bryn (an adjacent bungalow), and the new Vicarage now stand was conveyed to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England by the Marquis of Bath and Reverend Charles Palairet as a gift.

The Ecclesiastical Commissioners made a grant of £835 toward the provision of a house. Plans and specifications were submitted to them for approval in April 1862 and then returned to the architect JH Wyatt. However it is believed that the Vicarage – along with Danes Lye on the Westbury Road and Church Hill Cottage – were all originally designed by the Reverend Palairet. Kelly’s Directory for Wiltshire for 1895 says that the house was erected in 1863 at a cost of £1,600.

In October 1966 the house and most of the grounds were offered for sale by public auction, but failed to reach the reserve price of £7,850. It was subsequently bought by Mr R Coke-Wallis and conveyed to him on 31st March 1967. Proceeds from the sale were used to build the new Vicarage, as the new vicar wanted something more modern (and less costly to maintain) in which to bring up his young family. It was sold again in 1981 and to its current owners in 1986.
