The Elms - Millditch


This attractive Edwardian house was built by Henry Reeves (1850-1926) as a wedding present for his son, Robert John Ward Reeves (1875-1936), when he married Edith Sarah Whitaker in 1901. The front of the house, with its distinctive front porch facing Millditch, has stunning views over Church Coombe.

Like all of the houses owned by members of the Reeves family, it has a house sign made at Reeves Ironworks. It is harder to spot than the rest as it has been painted the same colour as the black gates to which it is affixed.

Robert and Edith’s eldest daughter, Kathleen (1901-1993) was the last member of the Reeves family to live there. She became a Director of Reeves Ironworks when her father died in 1936 until it closed in 1970.

There is a very poignant photograph of her in a wheelchair unveiling the commemorative plaque on the site of the old foundry on 17th April 1993, just 5 days before she died.
