This architecturally striking building sits in an elevated position at the entrance to Port Way, an ancient route between the Church Springs and Bratton Camp.

Harking back to the type of homes occupied by the British in Colonial India, this house was originally known as The Bungalow.

It has an interesting mix of features found in buildings of this era including a large, clay-tiled, Arts and Crafts style roof with dormer windows and tall chimney stacks.

Although some of the original features have been lost, such as the wooden verandas, the interesting conical corner room remains.

It is not clear when the name changed to Windygates, but the presence of the windmill in this old photograph highlights the exposed position in which it was built.
