Bill Knight


Wilfred (Bill) Knight was born February 1920 in Weston-super Mare and was always known as ‘Bill’. He was employed as an engine cleaner by the Great Western Railway, then as a fireman.

He took early retirement and became a full time gardener and handyman at Bratton House while his wife, Edna, worked as the housekeeper at the house. Later they moved to 5 Melbourne Street.

Bill and Edna played an active part in the village. Edna was a member of the W.I. and Bill helped to form the ‘Silver Threads’ club, a social club for the over 50’s. Bill helped with the village whist drives and regularly umpired for the Bratton Cricket Club. He enjoyed performing with the Jubilee Players and played Santa for many years, travelling by sleigh around the village leading up to Christmas, distributing sweets to the children.

He loved to dress up and took part in every garden fete at Bratton House, usually in fancy dress. Both Edna and Bill exhibited in the fete flower and vegetable show, Edna donating a rose bowl as a trophy.

Bill had a wicked sense of humour and was well loved by all. He enjoyed the village breakfasts and fish and chip evenings and supported most village events. He was much missed after he died in June 2008.

On his death he generously left money to the Jubilee Players and to the Cricket Club and Recreation Ground where the heavy roller has a brass plate with the name “Knocker Knight”.
