Harry WheelerHarry Wheeler was a farmer/contractor whose farmhouse was where Rosemary and Martin Osbourne live. Little is remembered of his activities on this site but he had a skillen (a milking parlour) off Court Lane along the track to St. Anne’s Cottage. He would drive his herd up for milking and as each animal was milked it would be set loose to return to the field. When milking was finished Harry would ride his bike to the field and shut the gate. Simple. One day Harry was in The Duke when a man entered and asked if he knew where Harry Wheeler lived. Harry, recognising the man as a tax inspector, told him. Following his directions he arrived at the farm only to be told by Harry’s wife that he would be at The Duke at lunchtime. Back at The Duke the inspector asked if he was Harry Wheeler and Harry said he was. The inspector asked why he had not said that initially and Harry replied that he was asked where he lived, not his name! On the contracting side of his activities Harry had a large Case tractor, a steam traction engine and a threshing machine. [Return] |
