Kathleen Reeves


Kathleen Reeves was the older sister of Marjorie Reeves. She was born in Bratton and lived at The Elms. She went to school at the Girls’ High School in Trowbridge and was an excellent pupil.

She much admired and supported her sister Marjorie who was an Oxford historian and Chancellor of St. Anne’s College. She accompanied her sister when Marjorie was lecturing in America, to broaden her own knowledge beyond the simple life of Bratton village.

Kathleen attended the Bratton Baptist Chapel and took part in their activities organising garden parties and sales of work, often held at The Elms the family home, raising funds for the Chapel upkeep. It is largely due to her Christian faith and strong sense of purpose that the Chapel is the thriving community it is today.

She was working in London at the time of her father’s death and had to reluctantly return to Bratton to become the Secretary to the R. & J. Reeves company, later becoming a director, company secretary and senior shareholder.

Kathleen was a highly intelligent woman, belonged to the village branch of the Women’s Institute, supported many village activities, secretary to the Baptist Chapel and also secretary to the parish council.

The picture shows her as a young girl bridesmaid at a family wedding in 1906.
