Kathleen White
Kathleen White

Kathleen White was born in December 1919. She grew up in the family home at Luccombe Terrace attending the village school and later college in Bath where she trained to be a teacher. In 1939 Kathleen was employed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, being part of a team in the Animal Health division involved in the tubercular testing etc. She met her husband, Roy, whilst doing farm work in Trowbridge and they were married in 1950 at the Baptist Chapel.

Kathleen taught at the former Nelson Haden Secondary school, and also at the village school in Steeple Ashton. She worked as a private music teacher and did part time work for the Wiltshire Rural Music School. Kathleen was a much loved member of Bratton History Association for many years and was President of the B.H.A. until her death in April 2018. She was a member of the parish council and Chairman for a number of years. In recognition of the work she did for the village she was given the ‘Freedom of the Village’ award.

She had an indomitable personality, actively involved in the local community and had an astonishing repertoire of stories about the local history, folklore and customs. Many of these drawn from personal recollections and local tradition. She was enthusiastic about sharing this knowledge with others. Kathleen regularly wrote articles for the local newspaper and shared her love of Bratton with children and with others. She was a lively speaker who is sadly missed by all who knew her.
